I. THEORY (12 lessons)
- How to work safely.
- Basic concepts and units in optical communications.
- Cable optical communication system elements.
- Optical fiber – structure and operating wavelength range. Attenuation and dispersion.
- Optical fiber types according to ITU-T.
- Optical power loss. Calculation of the optical line budget.
- Wavelength multiplexing (WDM) – CWDM and DWDM.
- Passive optical networks (PON) – types, topology, and a principle of operation.
- Designing of passive optical network and active equipment installation.
- Connecting optical fiber.
- Fiber optic splicing.
- Measuring optical power and optical line loss.
- Working with an optical reflectometer – the principle of operation, operating modes, basic settings, events analysis, and anomalies.
II. HANDS-ON EXERCISE (11 lessons)
- Arc fusion splicers – a principle of operation and basic settings.
- Splicer and cleaver maintenance. Common problems.
- Installation of an optical cable into an optical splice closure and wall-mountable box / ODF.
- Implementation of cable mid-span access.
- Arranging optical fibers.
- Measurement of optical line parameters with OTDR, events analysis.
